PS 3218 1.12 Chinese Numerals and method of simplfying fractions

Types of Chinese numerals based on decimal system

1. The standard or modern numerals that may have originated from common number-words in use from olden days

2. The official numerals (decorative form of standard numerals) used for legal documents and bank notes

3. The commercial numerals based on standard numerals, were devised for writing quickly and widely used in trade and commerce.

4. The stick or rod numerals for use in mathematical and scientific works.

Example 1: Simplify the fraction 49/91

49 49 7 7 7 7 7 7

91 42 42 35 28 21 14 7

The common divisor = 7 (teng)

So 49/91 = 7/13

(Note 91 – 49 = 42, then the top number is larger 49 – 42 = 7, the bottom number 35 – 7 = 35, 35 – 7 = 28, 28 – 7 = 21, 21 – 7 = 14, 14 – 7 = 7) The common divisor = 7, 49 /7 = 7 and 91 /7 = 13 therefore the simplified fraction = 7/13.

Example 2: Simplify the fraction 36/48

36 36 24 12

48 12 12 12

The common divisor = 12

Therefore 36/48 = 3/4

Example 3: Simplify 42/88

42 42 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 2

80 38 38 34 30 26 22 18 14 10 6 2 2

The common divisor = 2

Therefore 42/80 = 21/40
